New study conducted by Harris Poll on behalf of Orlando Health finds that men are more likely to skip the simple but critical step of a healthy lifestyle: an annual checkup with their doctor.

The survey found that a third of men (33%) did not think they needed a year-round medical examination and that almost two thirds (65%) believed they were naturally healthier than the rest. This is statistically impossible, says Dr. Thomas Kelley, family medicine specialist at Orlando Health Physician Associates.

Even if you think you are healthy and have no symptoms, there may be problems that are often invisible and can endanger life if left untreated. Some of these include high blood pressure which can be a seasonal bomb attack or stroke, as well as colon cancer, which is one of the most deadly but present cancers.

As a primary care physician, Drs. Kelley has heard many excuses from her male patients as to why they are skipping set times. He believes that the underlying cause is usually fear.

"If you're a man and you haven't been to the doctor in a long time, you don't really know what to expect." said Dr. Kelley. “One of the biggest challenges I face is having a good relationship with a pediatrician, and many men find the procedure easier than they thought.

Kelley says that building trust with your doctor can reduce feelings of anxiety and help to put the conversation in perspective, which in turn often builds confidence in return.
